Candy canes first came to America in the 20th century. When they first were made they were not canes at all, but rather sticks and they didn't even have stripes back then.
Candy canes were one of the first Christmas candies available and were just peppermint flavor.

When it comes to candy canes times have change. Although the traditional flavor of candy canes is still peppermint, they are now available in just about any flavor you want.

As the holidays are approaching it is time to start getting ready to do you holiday baking. Kids always love to help when it comes to making cookies and other treats. Gingerbread houses are especially fun to make with your kids.

One fun thing to make is gingerbread houses. Whether you are making them with just a few kids or a whole group of kids. just remember if you are doing them as a group project you may need a couple extra adults to help.

Here is a recipe to make mini gingerbread houses.

Ingredients:
Frosting : it is best if you make you own frosting so you can control the thickness of it. If  you rather buy frosting that works, but it is a bit hard to work with. To make your own frosting you will need:
  • 1/2 pound confectioner's sugar
  • 3 tbs. butter
  • 1/2 tsp. Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 - 2 tbs. Milk
Mix everything together to make your frosting, remember you don't want it to runny as the frosting is your glue to hold you gingerbread house together. If you find that your frosting is to think, just keep mixing in some extra confectioner's sugar until you get the consistency you want.

Tip: If while in the process of putting together your house especially if working with a group of kids and the frosting gets a bit to stiff , just add a dash of milk to make it thinner.

Now lets make our house
  • Break your graham crackers in half, you will need 7 halves for each house you want to make
  • Take one cracker and lay it flat for your base, you are then going to add the walls.
  • Place some of your frosting in the zip lock bag and squeeze it to the bottom of the bag, then cut off the corner so it resembles a pastry bag
  • Squeeze a line of frosting on all edges of the base of your house , then add the four walls.
  • You will want to do that quickly before the frosting hardens.
  • Next added frosting to all the seams of your house so there are no gaps.
  • Let your the frosting on your house dry for approximately 5 minutes or until firm.
  • Now it is time to add the roof. Take you last 2 remaining graham crackers and attach them to the sides directly across from one another to form a V. The seal the top.
Now you have your house. Let is sit for a bit to make sure the frosting has dried and all the seems are sealed. While you are waiting start getting your candy ready. Unwrap any candy that needs to be and place all your candies in groups.

Once your frosting is dried and your house is firm it is time to start decorating. Take some frosting and cover the roof of the house making it look like snow, then attach your roofing candies. If you are planning on adding doors and windows with frosting you may want to do it before frosting the roof.
Once you have added all your candies to decorate your house let them dry for a couple of hours.

These are a lot of fun to make and kids love seeing the masterpiece they have created. If you are planning on making them with a group or will be short on time, you might want to make the houses the night before and just do the decorating with the kids. It is not quite as much fun this way, but if there is not a lot of adult hands to help it will be easier as the kids to excited to see the finished project.

Here are some old time candy ideas for your gingerbread house:
There are many different kinds of candy you can use to decorate you house just remember these house are smaller so your candy should be also. What old time candy would you use to decorate your gingerbread house?
